Carole Bouquet, Marraine du projet PANTHER

Carole Bouquet, with Pure Ocean, invites companies and celebrities to support the Panther scientific project, an experimental seabed restoration project off the coast of the Île de Pantelleria.

In In Pantelleria, a Mediterranean island between Tunisia and Sicily, fishing yields are falling year on year. The cause: the growing negative impact of human activities on coastal habitats. The removal of seagrass, scraping and destructuring of rocky and sandy bottoms deprives marine life of support. In the long term, this will jeopardize the food security of our populations.

A SEABED RESTORATION PROJECT TO BRING BACK MARINE LIFE

The Panther project, winner of the Pure Ocean endowment fund’s 2023 call for projects and led by researchers at the Università Polytechnica della Marche, aims to experiment with community-based restoration of degraded habitats to establish a marine protected area.

Scientists, together with local fishermen, divers and residents, will replant posidonia, sponges and gorgonians to recreate, over a 200m zone2Scientific monitoring will be carried out using 3D photogrammetry, a cutting-edge imaging technique.

A FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN IN SUPPORT OF THE PANTHER PROJECT

Thanks to Carole Bouquet’s involvement, Pure Ocean hopes to raise funds to finance the project in Pantelleria. From 1er october to december 31, 2023or every donation of €1,000 to Pure Ocean, Carole Bouquet will offer a unique bottle of her prestigious Sangue d’Oro wine as a thank-you for the donor’s commitment (while stocks last).

THE PANTHER PROJECT IN BRIEF

This innovative, practical project, led by Agnese Riccardi, PhD student in marine ecology, and Carlo Cerrano, professor of marine zoology, both at theUniversita Politecnica della Marche in Rome, brings together scientists, fishermen from the Pantelleria Fishermen’s Association, local divers and island residents who will replant posidonia, sponges and gorgonians in a 200m area.2with a view to introducing a marine protected area. This ‘pilot’ initiative local adaptation to climate change could be a model for the technical and economic transition of the islands towards sustainable fishing and non-extractive activities such as eco-tourism.
