Themes : the 4 Pure Ocean Challenges
(based on the the United Nations 10 Ocean Decade Challenges)

  • Strengthen the climate resilience of marine ecosystems and people who depend on them
  • Improve our understanding of the ocean system

Eligibility

  • The candidate project must address one or several Pure Ocean Challenges.
  • We seek and support projects in all regions of the world.
  • There is no age limit to apply, but early career applicants are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Only research institutes, universities or NGO’s may apply. The project may involve a collaboration with private stakeholders (companies, startups, etc.).
  • Applicants should clearly outline their co-funding opportunities in their budget, as well as a minimum operating budget in the event that Pure Ocean cannot grant the full amount requested.

Amount granted

The selected projects will receive up to 40 000€/yr (25 000€/yr on average), for a duration of one or two years, at the discretion of the Scientific Committee. A two-year long project may therefore be awarded a maximum of 80 000€; support for some projects may be renewed for an additional year.

Key dates

  • Closing of the call on November 15th, 2022, midnight GMT.
  • Applicants should be informed of mid-term results, laureates will be announced on March 21st, 2023.

Specificities of the 2023 Call

This year, special attention will be given to projects :

based and/or carried out in the Brittany-Atlantic region

targeting polar ecosystems

addressing the issue of plastic pollution

seeking to quantify the blue carbon potential of marine habitats

Projects not integrating these specificities, but meeting the eligibility criteria, are of course accepted.

Evaluation criteria

Applications will be assessed against one criterion: impact, that is to say the tangible and lasting benefit provided by the realization of the project within the framework of one or more of the Pure Ocean Challenges.

Indicators used to assess the impact of a candidate project:

  • The project offers an innovative approach (technological, social, nature-based and/or exploratory innovation)
  • The project addresses one or several Pure Ocean Challenges in a precise and relevant way
  • The specific objectives of the project and the means to achieve them are clearly defined and achievable within the project duratio
  • The project involves active participation and collaboration of multiple stakeholders*, and fosters inter/transdisciplinarity
  • The project includes a dissemination plan tailored to share results with the various target audiences, as well as the actions necessary to engage with them

* If the project has a local/regional scope, at least one of the stakeholders must ensure a local/regional anchoring and local populations’ involvement.
