Researchers talked to a humpback whale for 20 minutes!

Off the coast of Alaska, scientists have had an incredible encounter with Twain, an adult female humpback whale. Following the emission of a “contact call” into the ocean, Twain came to meet them!

They then observed intentional acoustic and behavioral interaction between the whale and the team for 20 minutes!

The researchers would send out “contact calls” from humpback whale recordings made the day before, and Twain would answer every time. If they waited 10 seconds before replying, she would wait the same amount of time. This synchronization goes beyond a simple instinctive response, suggesting genuine two-way communication between man and whale.

What an incredible experience, paving the way for exciting new insights into these ocean giants!
