Crossing the Atlantic to raise awareness of ocean preservation

EDITION 2025

Jean-Pierre Dick sets himself a new challenge! On May 5, 2025, the famous sailor will set sail from Bermuda to Lorient single-handed. The goal is clear: to beat the reference time for this transatlantic race, with the ambition of completing the crossing in 11 days.

This crossing is being carried out in collaboration with Absolute Dreamer, to highlight the need to protect the ocean and support scientific research.

Jean-Pierre Dick is one of the most successful ocean racers of his generation. To his credit:

  • 4 victories in the Transat Jacques Vabre

  • 2 victories in the Barcelona World Race

  • 4th in the 2013 Vendée Globe after finishing without a keel

  • Winner of the Route du Rhum 2022 in the Rhum Mono category

  • Several solo and double-handed distance records

This crossing between Bermuda and Lorient marks the 5th edition of the Pure Ocean Challenge, still guided by a strong mission: to raise awareness of the urgent need to preserve the ocean, through a committed sporting adventure.

Record to beat: 11 days!

The Pure Ocean Challenge returned in May 2023 for its4th edition between Bermuda and Lorient. This year, 3 boats took part:

  • Jean-Pierre Dick on his “JP54 Notre Méditerranée, Ville de Nice” (JP54 Our Mediterranean, City of Nice)
  • Vincent Willemart on his TS42 “Banzai”.
  • Jacques Valente on his 42ft trimaran “Be Creative

BERMUDES LORIENT – DÉFI PURE OCEAN, proposed by PURE OCEAN, ABSOLUTE DREAMER and ADVANCED TRACKING is a sailing challenge across the Atlantic, open to all types of sailboats, with several objectives:

  • Beat the reference times,
  • Raising public awareness of the ocean and the need to protect it,
  • Collect data useful for scientific studies to protect the ocean,
  • Raising funds for ocean research.

To help everyone get involved in preserving the ocean, fund-raising campaigns have been set up online.

RECORDS BROKEN!

Jean-Pierre Dick and his crew won this monohull transatlantic race on the “JP54 Notre Méditerranée Ville de Nice” with a record time of 11 days 8 hours 38 minutes and 23 seconds, beating the reference time of 12 days 23 hours and 28 minutes set in 1979 for monohulls.

On the multihull side , Vincent Willemart and his crew won this transatlantic race on the “Banzaï” with a record time of 11 days 13 hours 53 minutes and 8 seconds! The previous crossing time of 12 days 23 hours and 16 minutes was set 40 years ago by Eugène Riguidel and Jean-François le Menec.

Following two successful editions in 2020 and 2021 between St Pierre et Miquelon and Lorient, the Pure Ocean Challenge will take place between Bermuda and Lorient in May 2022.

BERMUDES LORIENT – DÉFI PURE OCEAN, proposed by PURE OCEAN, ABSOLUTE DREAMER and LORIENT GRAND LARGE is a sailing challenge across the Atlantic, open to all types of sailboats, with several objectives:

  • beat the reference times,
  • raise public awareness of the ocean and the need to protect it,
  • collect data useful for scientific studies to protect the ocean,
  • raise funds for ocean research.

To enable everyone to get involved in ocean preservation, the crew has set up a fund for ocean research. To find out more and take part, click here .

The BERMUDES LORIENT – DÉFI PURE OCEAN came to an end on the weekend of May 14, 2022. Technical problems prevented the #JP54 crew from beating the record, but we’ll see you again next year for a brand new challenge!

J.P Dick’s crew just arrived in Lorient on Tuesday June 22nd, and broke the record set last year with a time of 7 days 14 hours 43 minutes and 43 seconds!
Congratulations to this incredible team.

After a successful first edition in 2020, Route Saint-Pierre & Miquelon and Pure Ocean will organize the second edition of the Route Saint-Pierre Lorient – Défi Pure Ocean in 2021. The starting line will be open from June 13 to 27.

The Route Saint-Pierre Lorient – Pure Ocean Challenge is a sailing challenge across the Atlantic, between Saint-Pierre & Miquelon and Lorient, open to all types of sailboats and any floating support pushed by the wind, with several objectives:

  • beating Éric Tabarly’s legendary time
  • raising public awareness of the ocean and the need to protect it
  • collect data useful for scientific studies to protect the ocean
  • raising funds for ocean research

Its vocation is to be an “other” race, focused on the urgency of saving the ocean and the means of doing so.

EDITION 2021

Last year’s record was beaten on Tuesday 22nd June with a new time of 7 days 14 hours 43 minutes and 43 seconds!

A legendary transatlantic race to raise awareness of the ocean’s fragility

UPDATE: The JP 54 crossed the finish line in Lorient on Monday July 27 at 08:08 and 31 seconds GMT, setting a new record for the Route Saint-Pierre Lorient of 8 days 12 hours 16 min 01 sec!

A 2150 nautical mile transatlantic sail from St Pierre de Miquelon to Lorient? With the crazy idea of beating Eric Tabarly’s legendary record of 10 days, 1 hour and 31 minutes?

This year, Jean-Pierre Dick’s JP 54 and Morgane Poupon’s Class 40 set off on Saturday July 18 at around midnight (Paris time) for the Route St Pierre Lorient – Défi Pure Ocean.

David Sussmann, president and founder of Pure Ocean, is taking part in the Challenge on The Kid, Jean-Pierre Dick’s JP54. During the race, David will share his logbook with us. Each day, he’ll make a video about his feelings during the transatlantic race, but above all he’ll talk to us about the ocean, the threats it faces and the role of science and researchers in finding solutions to protect it every day!
