Bravo Dr. Jennifer Matthews!
We are extremely proud to see Jennifer Matthews, leader of the Reef Reborn project, supported by Pure Ocean from 2022 to 2024, receive the NSW Premier’s Prizes for Science & Engineering – Early Career Researcher of the Year 2025.
This major award, presented by the Premier himself, recognizes scientific and technical excellence and honors researchers for their outstanding achievements.
🪸 Reef Reborn is a scientific breakthrough that makes a real difference for coral reefs.
While nearly the entire Great Barrier Reef is now threatened by warming, and the planet is facing the fourth global wave of coral bleaching, simply transplanting already doomed corals is of little use.
Natural reproduction, on the other hand, allows for genetic innovation and strengthens the long-term resilience of reefs.
🔴 The challenge: in the wild, less than 1% of coral larvae survive.
👉 Their innovation: a lipid cocktail that increases baby coral survival rates by over 46%.
The result: more genetic diversity, greater heat resistance, and more hope.
🔬 Three million larvae fed. Survival rates never seen before. Twelve new in situ experiments. A method integrated into the Australian national reef restoration plan.
A true proof of concept for restoring reefs in ways other than traditional coral transplantation.
💙 The Pure Ocean team is so proud to have supported this project from the very beginning, thanks to your support.
Because behind every innovation that protects the ocean, there are brilliant researchers… and visionary patrons who choose to fund science.
