An unprecedented treaty for the high seas – why is it great news for the ocean (and for all of us)?
With the 61st ratification – 61 countries having officially agreed to and approved the treaty – the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ – Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) will officially come into force at the beginning of 2026.
A milestone more than 20 years in the making through international negotiations.
➡️ In practice, this treaty opens the way to:
✔️ The creation of marine protected areas in the high seas
✔️ Fair sharing of marine genetic resources
✔️ Strengthened scientific cooperation between states
✔️ Real protection for biodiversity
🌊 Why is this historic?
Because the high seas cover nearly half the planet, play a key role in climate, biodiversity, and our economies… yet until now were almost entirely unregulated, even though they are a common good essential for everyone. ❌ Incredible, right?
#BBNJ marks the beginning of a new era for the high seas.
🌍 States are taking action – and what about us? Companies, you also have a role to play! Shall we start together?
